Exams

Hey everybody!

So this week is exam week for every one at Richard Bland.  I only had five exams to take this semester.  I did my RBC 101 exam quite a while ago, but I had four this week back to back to back to back.  First was my Western Civ that I had yesterday.  Today I have my Music Apparition exam.  Tomorrow I have my Fitness and Wellness, and finally I have my Religion exam on Thursday.  I think my Western Civ was probably my hardest exam, but I will treat them all the same.  You never know. . . Your easiest class could turn out to be the hardest exam.  Why I was thankful when Sweeney said we didn't have an exam in his class.  That was my easiest class this semester.  Thank you Mr. Sweeney!  Well I have to go study for my exam.  I wish everyone good luck with exams, if you have them, and I wish everyone a good day!

Done!

Well everyone it's finally here.  The last post I'm required to post for class, but don't be upset.  I promised I would continue this blog, and you can ask anyone, I don't break promises.

Well everything is starting to slow down.  Week after next are finals, and I'm so thankful that Mr. Sweeney doesn't have a final in his class.  All we have to do is write the last paper.  That's the only issue that I have right now.  We have to general topic we have to write on, Family, but I'm having so much trouble picking on a smaller topic to write about.  There are two possible topics I could write about, but the problem is I don't know how I could make them into an arugmenative paper.  The two are very close to me, and I feel that it will be very emotional when I write either of theses topics.

My life this past week has been interesting.  Been hunting with my dad every chance I get, cause as I said in my last post it's really the only time I feel like I get to spend time with him.  So the outcome of me hunting all the time. . . I don't get to go out as much.  Just more time I get to spend on my school work.

It's been a very yucky day here in good ol' Virginia.  It's raining at the moment, and everyone knows cold and wet do not mix well. . . unless you don't count a dogs nose.  Thats the only time cold and wet do mix well.  Well I'm going to relax for a while.  I just finished taking a final, and I've already had a test and a quiz in the same class today.  Hope everyone has a wonderful day.

Catching Up

So first off I must apologize for my laziness on posting.  I have been so busy lately with classes and my life outside of school I have been putting off typing a new post.  But I must type 10 post in order to get a grade for my English class... I believe this would be post number nine.  So I've got one more post after this and then I'm done for the class.  But as I promised I will try my hardest to continue to post as time goes on.  So lets catch up from where we left off.

Well since October a lot has gone on in my life, as well as in class.  In class we have done a lot of new grammer shammers, and we have started to do group readings.  The group readings have been really interesting to read, and they really make you think.  We also had a new paper to write.  It was on crime and punishment.  I wrote my topic on how the drinking age should be lowered.  I think it should be lowered because, our generation is already drinking and most of us aren't 21 yet.  Also wrote it on the fact that there are several arrests everyday for under aged drinking.  My thinking... lower the drinking age and you'll get people who don't care about drinking as much.

Now my life as been quite interesting these past few weeks.  Hunting season has started, which is awesome.  Pretty big deal for me because, this is the only time of year I feel like my dad and I really bond (I am the only one out of me and my sister that will go hunting).  But most importantly my family has really started to come together, and I gotta say.... I like having all my family together again.

Death and Torture

Kinda a spooky title I know.  But that is what the readings were on that we had this week.  Guess Sweeney is getting us in the mood for Halloween.

So Tuesday was the day we talked about death.  I will admit I did not read the reading, but we had a good time in class talking about it.  The reading was about this guy that had gotten the death penalty.  I do not know why he got that, but the story goes on to say that while he is on death row he changes and becomes a better person.  But in the end he still dies.  So we talked about if we thought the death penalty was a good or bad thing.  We concluded that the death penalty is good in certain cases like for serial killers, or for those who are mentally unstable and cannot be released into the world.  We then talked about if the death penalty was just a way of reducing the people in prisons (if it was cheaper to kill them for keep them in jail for life).

Thursday was when we talked about torture.  Again I did not read like I should have, but oh well.  From what I got the reading was about if torture was the right thing to do or not.  I think in some cases you need torture.  But anyway Sweeney had us split into two groups and debate about it.  Again my class seems to get too involved in these debates and I thought we were going to have a fight on our hands.  We then did a grammar shammer, but at the moment I do not remember what it was about.

Overall it was a good week in class.  Cannot wait to see what this week brings.

Fall Break

So this week we only had one day of class cause we had fall break.  Did not really do much in that one class.  Main thing we did was turn in our papers.  Do not know how many people turned in their papers on Tuesday, but I turned mine in.

Other than turning in our papers we had to go through this PowerPoint that I do not remember one thing about what so ever. (Sorry Mr. Sweeney!)  Then we went over another PowerPoint, but this time he did it in Prezi., which I hardly remember anything about too.  All I remember was the moving of the topics making me feel a little sick to my stomach, because they were moving so fast and all over the place.  For those that do not know what Prezi is, it is an over the top way of doing a PowerPoint.  It is kind of cool, but after a while it kind of gets a little boring.  We were supposed to have a reading that day too, but since over half the class did not read it, or like me they did not know about it, we just skipped over it all together.  Anyways that is about it for this one. Hope everyone has a good work week this week.

Week Back

So this week we had class like normal.  Felt kind of weird since we didn't have class any last week.  It wasn't long however until we fell into our normal routine.

On Tuesday we had a bit of a slow start.  We finally got into our grammar shammer groups, and talked about our pop culture papers we had been working on.   I have four people in my group so we split up the days we would talk about our papers.  The one guy in our group did his paper on the refs from the NFL that went on strike.  I liked his paper and felt it was a good current topic.  Next was one of the girls in our group who did her paper on students that go to school year round.  I liked her paper.  (Sorry to the people in my group who's names I didn't put, I did not want to spell your names wrong)

On Thursday in was back to our normal class routine.  We played a game on the computer, then went on the grammar shammer.  After that we went back into our groups and finished up talking about our papers.  I started off with my paper talking about how rap music is more vulgar than country music.  I am not saying rap music is bad (I listen to rap just as much as country) I was just saying it uses curse words more often.  The next paper we talked about was Haley's.  She talked about how pro athletes were getting paid too much, and I agree with her.  I believe that it is wrong that an athlete can make millions of dollars in one year, but the leader of our country only makes $400,000 per year.

Week Off

So this week we didn't have class at all.  We just had conferences with Sweeney to talk about our paper we're writing.  It was a weird conference for me because, I don't do well talking to adults one on one.  So I just sat there the whole time, which did not lead to much talking about the paper.  The whole conference lasted about three minutes, if that.  Was supposed to be like a 15 minute meeting.

Well being we had no class this week I'm afraid I don't have much more to talk about.

Not really in the talking mood because, I became sick last night and feel awful.

Well I hope everyone has a good weekend, and I will hopefully have a much better post next week.

Nothing

So this week in class we did what the title said. . . pretty much nothing.

On Tuesday we went to the Library for class, and were given a tour of the Library.  Gotta say I learned only one thing:  they have these sleves that roll, and it's pretty cool.  Watched some idiots. . . I mean fellow college students, try to get crushed in between the shelves.  I worry about our generation at times that being one of the times.  After the tour we went to a conference room, and were given a tour of the schools library website.  Some of the things I knew, because I had taken a class through Bland in high school, but I did learn a bunch more stuff.

Thursday was grammer shammer.  For those that don't know what grammer shammer is, it is an assignment given to us about grammer.  On Thursday two groups went; the first telling the difference between:  their/there/they're, loose/lose, chose/choose, and affect/effect.  I think there might have been another one, but I can't remember. Oh I remember now! It was the difference between its/it's.  The second group talked about the difference between :/;.  Now it suprises me on how some college students don't know the difference between these, but oh well.  Anyways, after grammer shammer we scheduled conferences to meet with Mr. Sweeny to talk about our paper, or life.  Which means no class all next week!  I don't know what I'll write about then.  Probably write it on the conference.  Mk bye!

Pop Culture

So first off I feel like I didn't introduce myself like I should have. So here's about me:  My names Kaylyn Chandler, I'm 18 years old, and I'm a true country girl. If I could spend my whole life outside I would.  I'm attending Richard Bland College getting an associates degree in Science with plans to transfer to Virginia Tech to major in forestry.

Now here's the stuff for class:
We had to read Felt Scene, it was about helping you write better, and helping you feel while you write.  I don't know about you guys, but I don't feel hardly anything but boredom when I write so I really didn't get anything out of the reading.  Well today we talked about possible topics we could write on in our Pop Culture paper coming up.  We thought of several good ideas to write about, but the two the seemed to stand out the most were movie ratings and country music vs. rap music.  With the ratings we talked about why movies were rated the way they were.  We said some movies were rated wrong, like the hunger games.  They showed people getting killed right on screen, we said it should have been rated R.  When we talked about the difference in country vs. rap it was a free for all.  Now i mainly listen to country, but I'll listen to rap too.  We said how country and rap could talk about the same thing, but the way they talk about them are so different.  In a rap song they'd say they're gonna go f*** that p**** all f***** night, but in a country song they'd say they were gonna take the girl home and make love to her all night.  In my opinion country music seems to not be as vulgar as rap music, but that's just my opinion.

Picking a Topic

Well the past two days in English have been interesting to say the least. We had to pick on three topics to write about for our essays.  Well we picked the first two topics fairly easy, Family and Crime and Punishment,  the third one, on the other hand, took forever to decide on.  We had to pick between Pop Culture or Environment.  Well I am not a big writer, but I will write about whatever, so I did not care which topic they decided on.  Well they got to debating about the two, and it got so heated that I thought there was going to be some fist fights.  It was funny and scary at the same time.  Well after not being able to pick on Tuesday we took a break and said we would pick on Thursday.  When Thursday rolled around it was like we had not even done anything on Tuesday.  There was more fighting and arguing, but we finally picked on the topic, Pop Culture.

It's amazes me so much that a group of 18 and 19 year olds can act like five year olds on something as simple as picking a topic to write about.

1st Blog

So for my English 101 class I had to make a blog, and write about the readings that we do in class or on anything with Mr. Sweeney's permission. Although this is for a class, I plan to keep up this blog all throughout my college days, and maybe after college too. So here we go:

We had to read two pieces of work called The Question of Originality and Writing and the Threshold Life. Going to be honest here . . . The Question of Originality was pretty boring to read.  It did not keep your attention very much and was a lot to read.  On the other hand though Writing and the Threshold Life was interesting.  It told a story at the beginning about a priest traveling with his attendant toward Kyoto from Mount Koya, discussing Buddhist teachings.  On the way to Kyoto they come upon an old woman in rags, who is Ono no Komachi.  Komachi was once a beautiful, famous poet who had at least one child, never married, and had many lovers. She now lives wandering the mountain trails.  She stops to rest on a stump when the priest come to her, and they berate her saying she is sitting on a stupa (sacred symbol of the body of Buddha). Komachi tells them that what they call a stupa, she calls a stump.  They go back and forth on wither or not it is a stupa or a stump, finally until Komachi says that she chose to approach the stump because it is the Buddha's body.  The priest then says it was wrong for her to sit on the stump, but she says wrong action may lead to salvation.  After this the priest says she is truly enlightened, they then ask who she is, and when she tells them she also tells of why she roams the mountains. . . to free the spirit of a former lover of hers that has come into her body.
